Simon Dawkins - New England Revolution - Dribbling

The San Jose Earthquakes will compete in their first of three consecutive road contests on Wednesday, April 19 against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. PT and the match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and KZSF 1370. 


The team will then travel to Texas to take on the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on Unimas, KNBR 1050 and KZSF 1370.


The Quakes enter Wednesday’s match after scoring consecutive last-minute equalizers in their last two matches to maintain an undefeated record at home in 2017. Newcomer Jahmir Hyka scored his first MLS goal in the 94th minute against FC Dallas on Friday, April 14, to earn the Quakes a point in the 1-1 tie.

The San Jose Earthquakes held the New England Revolution to a scoreless draw in front of a sold-out crowd at Avaya Stadium. The Quakes’ first look on goal came in the 20th minute when Simon Dawkins crossed the ball to forward Chris Wondolowksi who used his head to fire the ball just wide of Brad Knighton’s goal. In the 35th minute, Wondolowski created another chance with his head, sending the ball across the goalmouth only for Knighton to clear it with his fingers. With the game scoreless at halftime, the two teams looked to capitalize in the second half. In the 60th minute, the post came to the Quakes’ rescue to deny Kei Kamara’s shot. After Lee Nguyen sent a through ball to Kamara, the forward found himself in a one-on-one situation with Bingham. Kamara had a shot, but the ball ricocheted off the right post and the score remained level.  In the 77th minute, moments after entering the match, Henok Goitom received a pass from Darwin Ceren that put him past New England’s defense and through on goal. Goitom shot, but Knighton made the save. With the final whistle, the game ended scoreless and the Quakes earned their sixth shutout of the 2016 season. 


History of the Quakes – New England Revolution Rivalry
The Quakes are 20-14-6 all-time against the Revs in regular-season games and dominated the series from 2001-05 … The Quakes did not lose to New England for 12 straight games over those five seasons, putting together a 9-0-3 record, while out-scoring their opponent 27-11 from May 5, 2001 through Oct. 1, 2005 … The Revs had not beaten the Quakes since July 22, 2000 (2-1), until their 2-0 home victory on May 17, 2008 … On Mar. 10, 2012, forward Chris Wondolowski scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Earthquakes victory … New England won 2-0 on July 6, 2013 at Gillette Stadium with the Earthquakes dressing just 16 on their match day roster due to national team call-ups, injuries and suspensions … On March 29, 2014, New England defeated San Jose 2-1 thanks to a goal by Lee Nguyen in the waning moments of the match … On March 28, 2015, New England defeated San Jose 2-1 with both goals scored by Kelyn Rowe … The two teams drew 0-0 in their first matchup at Avaya Stadium on August 24, 2016.

The San Jose Earthquakes fell 2-1 to the Houston Dynamo in front of a sold-out crowd at Avaya Stadium. The Houston Dynamo took the early lead after Ricardo Clark finished Cristian Maidana’s cross that took a deflection and trickled across the Quakes’ box in the sixth minute. Five minutes into the second half, the Dynamo extended their lead to 2-0 when David Horst headed in Maidana’s free kick from the left flank. The home side retaliated moments later in the 54th minute. Bernardez scored his first goal of the 2016 season, sending in Alberto Quintero’s cross to bring the score to a one-goal difference.  


History of the Quakes – Houston Dynamo Rivalry
The history of the Earthquakes-Dynamo rivalry pre-dates their first meeting on the field, as the original San Jose Earthquakes moved to Houston following the 2005 season, with MLS eventually returning to San Jose in 2008 … The first meeting between the two clubs came on May 22, 2008, when the Earthquakes edged the Dynamo, 2-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium on the strength of second-half goals by Kei Kamara and Ivan Guerrero … On Sept. 13, 2008, the Earthquakes and Dynamo battled to the lone tie in the all-time series between the two clubs, a 1-1 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium … Later that season on Oct. 15, the Dynamo handed the Earthquakes a 2-1 defeat at Robertson Stadium … In 2009, the Earthquakes and Dynamo split the season series, with the Earthquakes winning 3-2 at Buck Shaw on March 28, and the Dynamo earning a 3-1 victory on May 23 at Robertson Stadium… With a 2-1 triumph over Houston at Robertson on Sept. 5, 2010, San Jose became the first of the two clubs to record a win on the road, as Earthquakes midfielder Khari Stephenson and former forward Geovanni each scored the first goals of their MLS careers … Houston returned the favor with a 1-0 decision at Buck Shaw on Oct. 16, 2010 … On June 4, 2011, San Jose earned a 2-0 home victory, the second-half goals coming from Steven Lenhart and Simon Dawkins … At the end of 2011, the Dynamo produced a come-from-behind 2-1 win in Houston on Sept. 17 … In 2012, the Houston Dynamo picked up a 1-0 victory thanks to a Brian Ching first-half penalty at AT&T Park in San Francisco on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 … Houston won the two teams’ first meeting at BBVA Compass Stadium 2-0 on March 30, 2013 thanks to goals from Will Bruin and Giles Barnes … San Jose routed Houston in a 3–0 victory on May 25, 2014 at Buck Shawn Stadium in Santa Clara, CA … With the help of a second half goal by forward Adam Jahn, the Earthquakes defeated the Dynamo 1-0 on May 5, 2015 at BVAA Compass Stadium … In their second meeting of the season, the Quakes fell to the Dynamo 2-0 at Avaya Stadium on July 10 … The Earthquakes fell to the Dynamo 2-1 in their final clash of 2015 at BVAA Compass Stadium … The Quakes routed Houston 3-1 at Avaya Stadium on May 11, 2016 behind Alberto Quintero’s brace … Chris Wondolowski made history as the second player ever to score against all 21 MLS clubs in the Quakes’ 1-1 draw with Houston at BBVA Compass Stadium in their second meeting of 2016 … The Quakes fell 2-1 to the Dynamo at Avaya Stadium on Aug. 19, 2016.


Earthquakes – Houston Dynamo Connections
Following the 2005 MLS season, the San Jose Earthquakes relocated to Houston as the Houston Dynamo … The Earthquakes (2001, 2003) and Dynamo (2006, 2007) each have a pair of MLS Cup championships, with only D.C. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES


Goonies Revival
The Earthquakes have scored last-minute equalizers in their past two games to remain undefeated at home in 2017 (2-0-2). Chris Wondolowski scored in the 90th minute against Seattle Sounders FC on April 8, while Jahmir Hyka equalized in the 94th minute against FC Dallas on April 14.


Growing Impact
With his stoppage-time goal against FC Dallas, Jahmir Hyka has now been directly involved in three of the Quakes’ eight goals so far this season (1g, 2a).


Mr. Consistent
Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski has scored six goals against New England in just nine appearances for San Jose. Since 2010, Wondolowski has not gone two consecutive matchups against New England without scoring.


Difference Maker
Chris Wondolowski has scored three game-winning goals against New England, tied for fourth-most all-time in MLS.


Road Record 
Chris Wondolowski is one goal away from leveling Landon Donovan’s record for most goals scored on the road in MLS history (63).



ACADEMY UPDATE
The Quakes Academy returns to action after participating in the 2017 Generation adidas Cup where they won third place in the premier division after defeating the Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Saturday, April 15. On April 22, the Quakes U-16s and U-18s will face off against Sacramento Republic FC’s academy, while the U-12s, U-13s and U-14s will take on the EBU Bay Oaks.
