The San Jose Earthquakes travel to Portland this week to take on the Timbers at Providence Park on Friday night. The match, which will be the second of three encounters against the Timbers this season, is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on UniMas, KNBR 1050 and KZSF 1370.
The Earthquakes enter the match following a 4-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first California Clasico of the season.

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Portland Timbers 3-0. Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski scored a brace and added an assist in the Quakes’ fourth victory of the 2017 MLS regular season (4-3-3). San Jose put together a complete performance that included holding leading scorer Fanendo Adi without a single shot on target in his 83 minutes. Earthquakes midfielder Jahmir Hyka opened the scoring in the eighth minute, notching his second goal of the season from Wondolowski’s fifth assist. Wondolowski doubled the lead in the 31st minute and later snagged his second goal of the night in the 55th, both on assists from Florian Jungwirth, to make the final score 3-0. The Quakes captain has now scored 10 goals in 13 games against the Timbers and leads the league in all-time goals against the Oregon side.
History of the Quakes – Timbers Rivalry
The Earthquakes and Timbers rivalry dates back to when the teams played in the North American Soccer League … The squads faced off for the first time as members of the NASL in 1975 in San Jose and the Earthquakes were victorious 2-1 with Ilija Mitic scoring both goals for the Quakes … The Timbers evened the series with a 2-1 home victory towards the end of the ’75 season … In 1976, the teams only met once and Portland got the better of the Earthquakes in a 1-0 victory in San Jose … The Earthquakes swept the 1977 season series with a 3-2 victory at home and 2-1 win in Portland … The Timbers came back in 1978 and outscored the Earthquakes 8-2 in two wins on their way to the NASL National Conference Final, where they lost to the New York Cosmos … The teams split the 1979 series with Portland winning 4-3 in San Jose and the Earthquakes winning 2-1 in Portland … In 1980, the Earthquakes dropped both games to the Timbers, losing each match by just one goal … The Timbers got the best of the Earthquakes in 1981 as well, sweeping the season series by finals of 3-0 and 2-1 … 1982 was the last NASL series between the two teams … The Earthquakes won the first game 1-0 in Portland and the Timbers were victorious 1-0 when they traveled to San Jose … The two sides played again in a 2001 exhibition in Portland and the Timbers were victorious 2-1 … The next meeting came in 2004 during the U.S. Open Cup and the Earthquakes won 3-0 … In 2005, the sides met again in the U.S. Open Cup and the Earthquakes were victorious 2-0 … The Earthquakes topped Portland in U.S. Open Cup Qualifying 1-0 on May 3, 2011 with Ike Opara scoring the game winner in the 120th minute … The Earthquakes and Timbers battled to a pair of 1-1 draws in 2011 … Portland got the better of San Jose 2-1 at JELD-WEN Field in the two team’s first meeting of 2012, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Earthquakes … Chris Wondolowski came off the bench to score a pair of second-half goals and rally San Jose from a two-goal deficit in a 2-2 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium on Sept. 19 … The Earthquakes and Timbers closed out the 2012 regular season with a 1-1 draw on Oct. 27. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
The Leader
Against the Galaxy on Saturday, Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski reached 20,228 minutes played for the Quakes, surpassing Ramiro Corrales for the all-time club record.
On The Board
Danny Hoesen scored his first MLS goal and added an assist to his season tally in the Quakes’ match against the Galaxy. All of the Quakes’ new signings that have featured in 2017 have now scored at least one goal each.
First 90
Midfielder Tommy Thompson played his first 90-minute shift of the season against the Galaxy and responded with his second assist this year, setting up the Quakes’ second goal of the match.
Silver Lining
Wondolowski continued his scoring form against Los Angeles over the weekend, recording his eighth goal in 16 appearances against the Galaxy and bringing his team-leading tally for the season to six goals.
First Time For Everything
The Quakes head to Portland looking for their first win at Providence Park where they’re currently 0-6-3.
Lumberjack
Wondolowski has scored 10 goals in 13 appearances against the Timbers, more than any other player since the Timbers began MLS play 2011.
RENO 1868 FC UPDATE
Reno 1868 FC continued their goal-scoring form last week with a 4-0 win at home against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Wednesday, followed by a 3-3 draw at Colorado Switchbacks FC on Saturday. The club is now on a five-game unbeaten run in USL play, outscoring opponents 19-5 in that span.
Reno will have the week off before resuming play on Wednesday, June 7, when they take on Rio Grande Valley FC followed by a Saturday matchup against Sacramento Republic FC. Both matches are at home and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. PT.
BURLINGAME DRAGONS FC UPDATE
Burlingame Dragons FC resume PDL play this week with a trip down to Southern California to take on Orange County SC on Friday, June 2, before facing FC Golden State at Citrus College on Sunday afternoon.
ACADEMY UPDATE
The Quakes U-12, U-13 and U-14 youth teams will conclude their U.S. Soccer Development Academy season this weekend. The U-12s will take on Star Academy FC on Saturday, June 3, while all three age groups will face off against the Marin FC Alliance youth teams the following day.
The older Quakes youth teams have already concluded their USSDA season. The U-15/16s just missed out on the playoffs, while the U-17/18s will enter the postseason as a wildcard seed. The playoff draw will take place on June 7.
