NEWS: Earthquakes Face Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park in U.S. Open Cup Semifinals on Aug. 9

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes will travel to Children’s Mercy Park to take on Sporting Kansas City in the West Semifinal of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 5:30 p.m. PT. The Quakes would then travel to take on the New York Red Bulls or Miami FC/FC Cincinnati in the Final on Wednesday, Sept. 20, should the team advance. Hosting scenarios for the Semifinals and Final were determined in a draw by U.S. Soccer on Friday morning.


The match marks the team’s first Semifinal appearance in the competition since 2004, in which the Quakes also hit the road to take on Kansas City.


The Quakes hold a 17-13 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup play. San Jose advanced to the Semifinals following consecutive wins over the San Francisco Deltas (2-0), Seattle Sounders FC (2-1) and the rival LA Galaxy (3-2). The team’s most recent victory over LA on July 10 at Avaya Stadium had 14,056 fans in attendance, a record for the Quakes in Open Cup play.


Sporting Kansas City earned victories over Minnesota United (4-0), the Houston Dynamo (2-0) and FC Dallas (3-0 OT). Sporting has won the tournament three times.
