SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired forward Danny Hoesen on a permanent transfer from Dutch side FC Groningen and signed him using Targeted Allocation Money, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC. Hoesen spent the 2017 season on loan with San Jose, totaling eight goals and five assists across all competitions.
"We’re very happy to have come to an agreement with his former club to bring Danny back on a permanent transfer,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “Securing his services for 2018 and beyond was a priority for us as soon as last season came to an end. He was a positive influence on our locker room and a steady contributor throughout the season. We’re looking forward to him showcasing his talent to the league once again next year.”
Hoesen, 26, appeared in 32 of the Quakes’ 34 MLS games in 2017, making 20 starts. His 32 appearances during the season trailed only Chris Wondolowski (34). He finished the year ranked tied for second on the team in both goals (5) and assists (5), with two of each serving as game-winners.
In addition to his contributions during league play, Hoesen was the team’s top scorer in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, tallying a goal in three consecutive matches against Seattle Sounders FC (Round of 16), the LA Galaxy (Quarterfinals) and Sporting Kansas City (Semifinals). His goals against Seattle and LA were both game-winners and helped propel the Quakes to the team’s first semifinal appearance in the U.S. Open Cup since 2004. The only MLS player to score more goals during the competition was Bradley Wright-Phillips (4) of the runner-up New York Red Bulls.
Outside of MLS, the Dutch-Moroccan striker has spent time in the Netherlands (FC Groningen, Ajax, Fortuna Sittard), Greece (Thessaloniki), England (Fulham) and Finland (Helsinki) during his career, totaling 65 goals and 36 assists in 249 professional appearances. Internationally, Hoesen has represented the Netherlands at various youth national team levels, scoring three goals in 13 appearances, including two goals in three appearances for the U-21s.
