Viewing Parties, Brew Bike Tours and More Happening in San Jose for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia
The San Jose Earthquakes are hosting viewing parties at Avaya Stadium for all 64 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. More than 6,000 fans piled into the Earthquakes’ home last weekend for an exciting slate of matches, including Mexico’s stunning 1-0 upset of defending champions Germany. The World Cup continues with several high-profile matchups scheduled this week, such as Lionel Messi’s Argentina vs. Croatia on Thursday at 11 a.m. and Saturday’s contest between Mexico and South Korea at 11 a.m. Find out more here.
Anibal, Harold fall to Belgium in first match of Group G of the 2018 FIFA World Cup
After a strong first half against European power Belgium, Anibal Godoy, Harold Cummings and Panama ultimately fell to The Red Devils 3-0 in the first match of Group G in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Quakes midfielder Anibal Godoy got the started and played the full 90 minutes in his country's first-ever World Cup match, while defender Harold Cummings remained on the bench for the entirety. Earthquakes Acquire Vitesse and Georgia National Team Captain Guram Kashia
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired center back Guram Kashia using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). Kashia has served as captain for both Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem and the Georgia National Team. He will be eligible to play for San Jose after the Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 10, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. “To reinforce select positions during the upcoming transfer windows, we began by identifying someone that fit the criteria we were looking for in a high-quality central defender and this was Guram,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “In addition to his extensive experience, he is a leader both on and off the field and we’re confident he will be an important addition to our squad.” Learn more about Kashia here.
United Bid Selected to Host the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The United Bid of Canada, Mexico, and the United States was selected to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup earlier today by the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. The Bay Area, featuring Levi’s Stadium, stands as one of 23 candidate host cities under consideration for the historic event. For the first time in history, FIFA’s Member Associations were given the opportunity to vote on the host for the FIFA World Cup, and did so by a vote of 134-65. “We are thrilled to hear the news that FIFA has selected the United Bid of the U.S., Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” said Earthquakes President Tom Fox. “It will be a true honor to have the tournament here on home soil, and we look forward to welcoming the premier players and national teams from throughout the world to North America and specifically the United States.”Read the full story here.
MLS Homegrown Team to Face Tigres U-20s in MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer®
Major League Soccer announced that the MLS Homegrown Team will take on Tigres UANL, the reigning Mexican league’s Under-20 champion, in the fifth annual MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer® on July 31, 2018, at 8 p.m. ET at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, part of a week of events during 2018 MLS All-Star Atlanta. In addition to the live national broadcast on Univision Deportes Network (UDN), the MLS Homegrown Game will be streamed live on Twitter for the first time in the history of the event.
