Homegrown midfielder Gilbert Fuentes has returned to San Jose after participating in a four-game international training camp with the United States U-17 Men’s National Team from Aug. 2-13. Fuentes and the U-17s traveled to Costa Rica for a pair of matches against Mexico and host Costa Rica.

On Aug. 6, Fuentes started for the U.S. in the 1-0 win over Mexico. Sounders FC II forward Alfonso Chavez scored the United States’ game-winning goal.

The following day, the Americans faced Costa Rica in their second match and drew 2-2 with the hosts. Fuentes did not feature in the match, as the U.S. played the second team.

In the third match on Aug. 10, the U.S. took on Costa Rica for the second time. The U.S. earned a 2-1 win over the hosts, coming back from a 1-0 deficit.

On Aug. 12, the U-17s played their fourth and final match against Mexico. The U.S. fell to their rivals, finishing the international training camp with a 2-1-1 record.

This past four-game training camp in Costa Rica was one of many competitions that the U-17s will participate in to prepare for the 2019 U-17 FIFA World Cup. Fuentes has been a regular for the U-17s, having competed in the 2017 Nike International Friendlies Tournament as well as the 2018 Sportchain Cup in Spain, which the U.S. won.
