NEWS: Earthquakes Homegrown Defender Nick Lima Called to U.S. MNT

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes Homegrown defender Nick Lima has been called to the United States Men’s National Team for the upcoming January Training Camp, taking place from Jan. 6 to Feb. 3.

The 2019 January Training Camp will begin at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. for two weeks of training. The U.S. MNT will then travel to Phoenix, Ariz. ahead of the match against Panama on Jan. 27, before heading to San Jose to prepare for the match against Costa Rica at Avaya Stadium on Feb. 2. The match at Avaya Stadium will air on FOX and Univision Networks at 12:30 p.m. PT. The camp and matches mark the first for U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Berhalter since being named to the position in December.

Lima, 24, signed a Homegrown Player contract with the Earthquakes on Dec. 21, 2016. The Quakes’ second-ever Homegrown Player, Lima started 20 games and tallied two goals and an assist during his rookie season in 2017, earning a spot as a finalist for the MLS Rookie of the Year award. He was rewarded with a call-up to the 2018 January Training Camp, his first at the youth or senior national team level.

The native of Castro Valley, Calif. started all 34 matches in 2018, finishing as one of MLS’ league-leaders in minutes played (3,049), missing just 11 minutes of action. He also recorded two goals and two assists, including one of each against eventual MLS Cup champions Atlanta United FC on Sept. 19.
