The Earthquakes are preparing for their second season under head coach Matias Almeyda. In 2019, the club more than doubled their points total and more than tripled their wins total from one season prior, despite just 20% of field player minutes being given to newcomers. San Jose also experienced a 12-match home unbeaten streak during the season (10-0-2), their longest such run since 2013.

Toronto FC is the reigning Eastern Conference champion and has reached the MLS Cup Final in three of the last four years, winning in 2017. The Canadian side is led by Spanish midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo, who was one of two players in MLS in 2019 to record at least 12 goals and 12 assists (Carlos Vela).

2020 marks the fifth consecutive year in which the Quakes’ first match of the regular season takes place at Avaya Stadium. It also marks the third time in the last four years that San Jose’s home opener is against a team from Canada (MTL – 2017, 2019). San Jose is 4-1-0 in five prior home openers at Avaya Stadium, while scoring first in each match.

MLS also announced the Quakes’ Week Three matchup takes place on March 14 against the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium (4:30 p.m. PT).
