“Over many years, Tommy has proven to be a great player and ambassador for the club,” said Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli. “In addition to being a valuable contributor for our First Team, he has also gone to great lengths to serve as a strong role model for youth players all around the Bay Area in this difficult time. We’re very happy to have him continue with us beyond 2020.”

Thompson, 25, joined the Earthquakes in 2014 as the club’s first-ever Homegrown Player. He has since tallied four goals and nine assists in 143 appearances, making 84 starts. Previously a midfielder, Thompson was converted to fullback by head coach Matias Almeyda and has appeared in 50 of the team’s 57 regular season matches since the start of the 2019 season.

Thompson was named the recipient of the club’s Andrew Bedard Spirit of the Game/Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2017 and 2019. The award is named for Andrew Bedard, a young Earthquakes fan who passed away at eight years old in 2004. The Andrew Bedard Spirit of the Game Award is presented annually to the Earthquakes player that contributes greatly to the community and best embodies Andrew’s positive attitude both on and off the field.
