RECAP: Earthquakes 3, Oakland Roots SC 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes concluded their 2021 preseason with a 3-2 victory over Oakland Roots SC at PayPal Park on Friday morning.


Oakland would take the lead in the 40th minute through a penalty kick by Johnny Rodriguez. The Roots would then extend their lead in the 59th minute after a low shot by Yohannes Harish.


San Jose would respond with a goal from distance by Eduardo Lopez in the 75th minute, beating the keeper at the near post. Just two minutes later, the Quakes would tie the match after a cross by Luciano Abecasis found Carlos Fierro for the tap-in. San Jose continued to push on for a game-winner and found it in the 84th minute when Lopez sent a through ball to Cade Cowell, who blasted a low shot inside the far post.


The Earthquakes will now prepare for their 2021 MLS season opener against Houston Dynamo FC on Friday, April 16. The match kicks off from BBVA Stadium at 5:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California Plus, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.
