MATCH PREVIEW: Quakes enter historic matchup with Vancouver for Western Conference, Supporters’ Shield supremacy

Munie and Preston 16x9

The San Jose Earthquakes return home Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. to host Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a matchup between the top two teams in the Western Conference. Kickoff from PayPal Park is slated for 7:30 p.m. PT and will air globally on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as via local radio on KSFO 810 AM (English) and La Kaliente 1370 AM (Spanish).

The Quakes continue to sit atop the Western Conference and Supporters' Shield standings (9-1-1) after escaping Toronto with a 1-1 draw last Saturday thanks to a Preston Judd equalizer and a Reid Roberts last-minute goal-line clearance that earned the latter Team of the Matchday honors. Vancouver is right on their heels at 8-1-1, making Saturday's clash the highest combined points-per-game matchup between two clubs after at least 10 games in Major League Soccer history at 2.52. In each of the five previous top matchups of this kind, the eventual Shield winner was on the pitch. Both clubs also made MLS history as the first to ever win eight of their first nine league games, and they are tied for the league lead in goals with 26 apiece.

The last time these sides met, Beau Leroux's stunning first-half stoppage-time screamer from just outside the box was the only goal in a 1-0 Quakes road win at BC Place. A home win Saturday would give San Jose their first season sweep of the Whitecaps since 2023. In their most recent meeting at PayPal Park last year, Judd delivered a dramatic second-half stoppage-time winner for a 2-1 Quakes victory, with his iconic leap into a raucous Seismic Union supporters' section, now one of the enduring images of the 2025 season.

Adding another layer to an already compelling feature, both squads boast German Designated Players who were once teammates on the national stage. San Jose's Timo Werner—April's MLS Player of the Month—and Vancouver's Thomas Müller played together for Germany at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020, combining for 72 international goals. In 13 Bundesliga meetings, Müller's Bayern Munich side held an 8-1-4 advantage over Werner's VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig clubs combined, with Muller scoring once to Werner's three goals. On MLS turf, however, the San Jose star already holds the early edge after the Quakes' 1-0 road win over the ‘Caps on March 21.

However, with Werner’s status still in question due to an injury he incurred in last week’s U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 win over Minnesota United FC, San Jose might have to call upon the “Next Man Up,” as the team’s underrated depth has been a key part to the Black and Blue’s success this season. Jack Skahan has proved more than capable when replacing Werner on the wing, scoring three goals and notching two assists in five starts across all competitions. Paul Marie even set an MLS record off the bench against Austin, amassing three assists in a lightning-quick 5:28. In fact, despite losing the prolific trio of Cristian Espinoza, Chicho Arango and Josef Martínez in the offseason, San Jose actually has scored more goals (32-24) and dished out more assists (32-20) after 11 league games in 2026 than 2025.

The ‘Caps enter Saturday’s match five games unbeaten after battling to a 1-1 road draw with the LA Galaxy. Defender Mathías Laborda spared the Caps late on, while also nodding home a header off a set piece delivered by U.S. international midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to snatch a point at the final whistle.

Leading in goals for Vancouver is forward Brian White with eight, currently tied for third in the league's Golden Boot race. Second to him is Müller, with five total goal contributions on the season (4g/1a). On the back line, reigning MLS Defensive Player of the Year Tristan Blackmon, who played collegiately in Northern California at Pacific, will be tasked with stopping Judd.

The rivalry between these two clubs stretches back to 1974, when both entered the NASL as expansion sides. Their very first match was against each other, resulting in a 2-1 Quakes road win. Fifty-two years on, the stakes have never been higher.

Matchday 12 presents one of the most anticipated regular-season fixtures in recent MLS memory. With a historic league start intact and the Supporters' Shield race tightening by the week, the Quakes look to reaffirm their status as the West's best against the one side who has matched them stride for stride thus far.

“As players, we need to go out and show why fans need to keep coming to our games and the product we put out there,” said Quakes defender Daniel Munie. “I think we have a fun group. We’re looking forward to the test this weekend. I think it’s going to be a fun and exciting game. I think the crowd’s going to be behind us.”
