MATCH PREVIEW: Quakes look to bounce back in Vancouver

Ronaldo Vieira - Edited

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes are back on the road to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT. The match will stream globally on Apple TV (English/Spanish) and air locally on KSFO 810 AM (English) and La Kaliente 1370 AM (Spanish).

All eyes turn to the Pacific Northwest as new Quakes Designated Player Timo Werner clashes for the first time with fellow German superstar Thomas Müller, now with Vancouver. The pair were teammates on Die Mannschaft for international duty several times, most notably in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2020.

The Earthquakes will aim to rediscover their attacking rhythm after suffering their first loss of 2026 last Sunday to Seattle Sounders FC following an unprecedented three consecutive wins and three clean sheets to start the season. The narrow 1-0 defeat snapped a club-record 290-minute shoutout streak on the defensive end and ended the Quakes’ 23-game scoring run on the attacking front.

That’s not to say San Jose didn’t have their chances to equalize. Bruce Arena’s Black and Blue outshot Seattle 25-7, had more shots on goal (8-4), won more corner kicks (17-0), had more expected goals (3.0-0.5) and even outpossessed them (59.6%-40.4%). But they just couldn’t find the back of the net, so the attacking trio of Ousseni Bouda (2g), Preston Judd (2g) and Timo Werner (2a) will look to put numbers on the scoreboard once again Saturday north of the border.

The back line submitted another solid performance, highlighted by center back and burgeoning anchor Daniel Munie. In fact, his current top speed of 22.3 miles per hour is not only is best among all MLS defenders this season, but second among all MLS players regardless of position.

Meanwhile, Whitecaps FC looks to remain perfect through Matchday 5 as their dominant victory over Minnesota United FC last week equaled their best start to an MLS season in club history (4-0-0). The ‘Caps have three starters coming off MLS Team of the Matchday performances with defender Mathías Laborda, midfielder Sebastian Berhalter and forward Brian White all earning honors. Berhalter leads the team in goal contributions across all competitions this season (3g/4a), while White is currently tied for first in the Golden Boot race with FC Dallas forward Peter Musa with five goals this season.

Historically, matches at BC Place have proven difficult for visiting teams, and Vancouver has made the most of its home-field advantage early this year. Saturday’s contest presents another opportunity for San Jose to measure itself against one of the Western Conference’s top sides while aiming to secure their second road win of the season in as many tries.

A result on the road against the red-hot ‘Caps will put the Quakes’ resiliency on display after their first taste of adversity in 2026.

“We're making progress as a team, and it was a good lesson for us,” said Arena following last Saturday’s match. “Hopefully we can learn from it and get better.”
