NEWS: Earthquakes to Face RC Celta de Vigo in International Friendly on July 20

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes will face LaLiga side RC Celta de Vigo in a friendly at PayPal Park on Wednesday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. PT. It marks the first meeting between the two clubs and San Jose’s fifth match ever against a team from Spain.

The match will serve as Bonus Game B for Earthquakes Season Ticket Holders and is included in their ticketing package. Season Ticket Holders will also get an exclusive presale to purchase additional tickets beginning Tuesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. PT. Tickets will then be made available to the general public on Wednesday, June 15 at 1 p.m. PT by clicking here. Founded in 1923, Celta de Vigo have competed in LaLiga, Spain’s first division, since 2012-13. Their best season since earning promotion came in 2015-16 when they finished sixth in LaLiga, and subsequently reached the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League before falling to eventual champions Manchester United. Celta have reached the final of the Copa del Rey three times, most recently in 2000-01.

Led by Argentine head coach Eduardo Coudet, Celta de Vigo’s roster includes Mexico National Team players Orbelín Pineda and Néstor Araujo. The club is also led by Spain National Team midfielders Brais Méndez and Fran Beltran, Peru National Team midfielder Renato Tapia, and Colombia National Team defender Jeison Murillo. Team captain Iago Aspas, formerly of Liverpool and Sevilla, has also scored six goals in 18 appearances for Spain.

The Earthquakes have an 11-11-12 record in international exhibitions, including an undefeated 1-0-3 record against Spanish clubs. The Quakes currently hold a 4-2-4 record in their last 10 international friendlies, most recently defeating Clausura 2021 Liga MX champions Cruz Azul 2-0 at PayPal Park on Oct. 7, 2021. The last time San Jose faced an opponent from Spain was on July 16, 2019, resulting in a 1-1 draw against LaLiga side Real Valladolid at PayPal Park.
